NOTE ON CASTING

The show’s heart lies in its message of inclusivity and racial integration. Casting should reflect this intentionally. Roles such as the Von Tussles are traditionally white, and roles like Motormouth, Seaweed and Little Inez are black performers, as race is integral to the story.

 

Tracy Turnblad Perky, upbeat, unstoppable optimist with a genuine heart. Strong comedic timing and excellent pop belt. Must dance well.
Gender: Female presenting Vocal range: G3-G5 Age: Late teens to early 20s

Edna Turnblad – Tracy’s loving but self-conscious mother. Warm, wise, funny, and nurturing. Traditionally played by a man in drag – should be grounded and heartfelt. (CAST) Seeking US only.

Wilbur Turnblad – Tracy’s supportive, quirky father and joke-shop owner. Genuine, goofy, and loving.
Gender: Male presenting Vocal range: A3 to A5 Age: 40s-50s

Penny Pingleton Tracy’s dorky but sweet best friend. Awkward at first, but blossoms into a confident young woman. Strong comedic timing.
Gender: Female presenting Vocal range: A3-G5 Age: Late teens to early 20s

Velma Von Tussle – Producer of the Corny Collins Show. Overbearing stage mother to Amber. Stylish, manipulative, and ruthlessly ambitious. Strong mover/dancer.

Amber Von Tussle Snobby, vain, and self-absorbed. Tracy’s rival and Velma’s daughter. Must dance well.

Link Larkin – Corny Collins Show heartthrob. Smooth, but with an emerging conscience. Must dance well.
Gender: Male presenting Vocal range: G3 to A5 Age: Late teens to early 20s

Corny Collins – Charming, charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. Smooth-talking and good-natured. Strong singer with a magnetic presence.
Gender: Male presenting Vocal range: D3 to A4 Age: 25-35

Motormouth Maybelle – Owner of a downtown shop and mother of Seaweed and Little Inez. Warm personality and unshakable integrity.
Gender: Female presenting Vocal range:E3 to E5 (strong gospel/popbelt) Age: 30s-50s

Seaweed J. Stubbs – Talented dancer and singer. Cool, confident, and sweet. Romantic interest for Penny. 
Gender: Male presenting Vocal range: F3 to D5 Age: Late teens to early 20s

Little Inez – Seaweed’s younger sister. Bright, and full of energy. Great mover.
Gender: Female presenting Vocal range: G3 to E5 Age: pre-teen to early teens

The Dynamites – The Dynamites are a talented vocal trio who are featured in many numbers and usually in tight harmony. Gender: Female presenting
Vocal Ranges: Soprano, Mezzo and Alto

Female Authority Figure  Multiple roles. Prudy Pingleton: Penny’s uptight, overprotective mother / Gym Teacher: tough gym teacher / Matron: stern prison matron. Strong character actor. Tap experience is a plus.

Male Authority Figure – Multiple roles.  Harriman F. Spritzer: The abrasive sponsor of the Corny Collins Show / Mr. Pinky: The owner of Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway clothing boutique / High School Principal: The authority figure who kicks Tracy out of school / Prison Guard: The guard in the women’s house of detention.
Gender: Male Presenting Vocal range:(B2 to E4) Age:30s-50s

 

Ensemble (Teens to adults, all ethnicities) – Plays multiple roles, including Council Members, Students, Reporters, Guards, Party Guests, and more. Must sing and dance well. The ensemble also doubles as dancers for the Corny Collins Show – must have strong movement and period style.
